It is told from the perspective of a young girl (ages 10-14) during the rise of Hitler in Nazi Germany. The story starts as her impoverished mother takes her (and her brother) to live with a new foster family hoping to give her a better life. The story is full of coming of age, dealing with poverty & war, sharing commonalities with others, and learning to love across many hardships.
She shares her nightmares with a young jewish man who is hiding in their basement, they share their dreams of a better future, and the shame of living, when other loved ones do not make it.
